I didn’t mean to take such a close-up of Earth Elements Farm’s Matthew B., but it happened that way in the end and now his dreamy blue eyes are documented for posterity. Pints of pickled peppers

No joke: One saturday a few weeks ago it took me almost an hour to cut all these and make my special-recipe brine. I also made stuffed peppers that day, and MLR and I had them for lunch the next day.

Memento mori

When I left for Scotland in September I left a vase (actually an old Barr soda bottle) on my table with a thistle in it. When I came back the thistle was dead, of course, but something really strange had happened to it. There was a fly on it, and the fly was dead too. It reminds me of the paintings of the Dutch masters in which — at least I thought — flies were there as memento mori. But I checked back with some sources (Svetlana Alpers, MLR, etc), and remembered that the flies are not dead in the pictures, but are usually the only living things in the pictures of dead game, etc. Even though they too will die, maybe they were memento vivi?

Lots of friends having babies, and I don’t have time to make quilts. But I do have the occasional down-time in which to embroider some onesies. This has caused a consant chorus of ‘awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww’ whenever I show them to people…..

Rannoch Moor

I visited Rannoch Moor on Tueday 22 July. I was leaving Pitlochry for Edinburgh and was invited by a woman I met in the youth hostel to drive through the moor first. It was absolutely lovely. My trip didn’t include enough time outdoors — July was archives, cities, metros, trains — but this day made up for it.

Here are pictures that tell the story of a week: a finished quilt, a new-and-improved bottle tree, and a visit from Liam. The quilt got to Dad in time for Father’s Day; the bottle tree is withstanding the Oklahoma wind (although I sacrificed a Trader Joe’s tote to Aeolus oklahomus last week), and Liam washed those and all the other dishes we produced last weekend.

Now I’m writing my paper for the upcoming CHEIRON meeting and getting ready for my research trip to Glasgow. Busy times!
